What Is The Conflict In Between Shades Of Grey?
“What is the central conflict in ‘Between Shades of Grey’? The primary conflict in the story revolves around the harrowing experiences of Lina, Jonas, Elena, and Kostas, who find themselves forcibly taken by the NKVD, a Soviet security agency. Initially, the connection between their abductions and the reasons behind them remains unclear, setting the stage for a gripping external conflict. In addition to this external struggle, each of these characters grapples with their own internal conflicts, making the narrative even more compelling and emotionally charged. This complex interplay of external and internal conflicts forms the heart of the story, creating a rich and immersive reading experience.”
How Does Between Shades Of Grey End?
“How does the story ‘Between Shades of Grey’ conclude? At the end of the narrative, Lina finds a glimmer of hope as she and Jonas manage to endure the harsh winter conditions. The epilogue offers a heartwarming resolution by revealing that Andrius, who had been separated from Lina during the war, is eventually reunited with her, and they get married, signifying a return to normalcy and happiness after the hardships they endured.”

In Sepetys’ Between Shades of Gray, the antagonist is not one single character but the Soviet Union itself. It is because of the Soviet Union and premier Joseph Stalin that Lina Vilkas, her mother, and her younger brother were uprooted from their home in Lithuania and forced into a Siberian labor camp. The most obvious, main conflict is that Lina, Jonas, Elena, and Kostas have been taken by the NKVD, and so have many others, with no clear connection (in the beginning). This is an external conflict; however, each character also experiences their own internal conflicts. The story ends with Lina feeling some sense of hope because she and Jonas have survived the winter. The epilogue indicates that Andrius and Lina reunite and marry after the war.
